A well-maintained electric bike or conversion kit isn't just about looks — it means brakes that stop on time, a battery that keeps its capacity for years, and a drivetrain that won't leave you stranded halfway through a ride. The electrical components (motor, controller, display) need far less attention than the mechanical ones (brakes, chain, tires), but both categories deserve a clear routine, not random fixes only after something breaks.

You don't need a specialized workshop to keep on top of most of this. A basic bike toolkit — Allen keys, an adjustable wrench, tire levers, a floor pump and a chain wear indicator — covers almost every task below. The only extra item worth having on hand is a bike-specific degreaser and lubricant, since household cleaning products and general-purpose oils can damage rubber seals and attract more dirt than they remove.

Cleaning your e-bike the right way

Regular cleaning prevents abrasive sand and dust from building up in the chain, bearings and brake pads — the leading cause of premature wear. The basic rule for any bike with electrical components: never point a pressure washer or a direct hose jet at the motor, controller, display or connectors. Even though most components carry an IP rating that makes them splash-resistant, the pressure from a hose or a power washer can force water past the seals.

Recommended cleaning steps:

  1. Brush off dry dust and mud with a soft brush before using any water — this reduces scratching and keeps abrasive particles out of sensitive areas.
  2. Use a damp cloth with warm water and mild soap on the frame, motor housing and controller casing. Avoid strong solvents or aggressive degreasers on electrical components.
  3. Clean the chain and cassette with a dedicated brush and a bike-specific degreaser, not an industrial solvent that can damage rubber seals.
  4. Wipe connectors and plugs with a dry cloth — don't get them wet directly, even if they carry an IP65 rating.
  5. Let the bike dry fully in the shade before storing it, especially before a longer break.

After cleaning, it's the ideal moment to check exposed bolts as well — vibration from rough terrain can gradually loosen them, and a regular cleaning routine gives you a chance to spot any unusual play early.

Brakes, chain and tires: what to check and how often

Mechanical components wear out far faster than electrical ones and are the main cause of safety-related issues. Here's a concrete schedule, applicable both to fully-assembled DUOTTS bikes and to bikes fitted with a conversion kit:

Worn brake pads are the single most common reason for a service visit on an electric bike — the motor adds extra speed, so the braking system does more work than on a regular bicycle. Don't delay replacing pads once they drop below the minimum thickness.

Battery storage and care

The battery is the most expensive component of any e-bike battery system and the electrical setup as a whole, and yet the most commonly mishandled. A few basic rules that apply to any lithium battery used on e-bikes:

  • Never store the battery fully discharged — a deep discharge held for a long time can permanently damage the cells. For storage longer than 2–3 weeks, charge to 40–60%.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures — don't leave the battery in a car in summer heat or in an uninsulated garage during winter frost. Ideal storage temperature is 10–20°C.
  • Don't store fully charged for long periods — charging to 100% followed by extended storage accelerates capacity loss.
  • Check the charge level periodically if the battery sits stored for more than a month — natural self-discharge can drop it below a safe threshold, so recharge to 40–60% if needed.

Seasonal maintenance: preparing for winter and summer

Seasonal changes bring different challenges for an electric bike. In summer, the main risks are battery overheating from direct sun exposure and accelerated tire wear on hot asphalt. In winter, the challenges multiply: low temperatures temporarily reduce battery range, road salt and brine accelerate corrosion on metal components, and constant moisture tests the seals on every connector.

Quick troubleshooting: the most common issues

Most problems that show up after a few months of use have simple causes and quick fixes — they don't necessarily require a service visit. The most common symptoms on conversion kits and electric bikes, with the most likely technical cause:

  • Lower range than expected — usually low tire pressure, too high a default PAS assist level, or natural battery degradation after many charge cycles.
  • New noises while pedaling or from the motor wheel — often a worn bearing inside the hub motor, a slightly bent brake disc rubbing the pad, or a cassette clogged with dried dirt.
  • Display not responding correctly to commands — frequently a loose connector between display and controller, or a menu parameter reset by accident (voltage, wheel size).
  • Inconsistent or delayed PAS assist — wrong gap between the PAS sensor and the magnet ring, or a magnet ring with too few magnets for a smooth response.

When to see a technician and when to DIY

Not every problem needs a technician. General rule: basic mechanical work and visual checks you can handle yourself with standard bike tools; problems involving opening the motor, repairing the controller, or working on the battery cells need qualified personnel.

How often should I clean an electric bike?

A quick wipe of the frame and a tire pressure check weekly, plus a more thorough clean of the chain and drivetrain monthly. After rides through mud or sand, clean as soon as possible to prevent premature wear on bearings and the chain.

Can I wash an electric bike with a hose or pressure washer?

Not recommended directly on the motor, controller, display or connectors — water pressure can force liquid past the seals even on components with an IP rating. Use a damp cloth and low-pressure water only on the frame and wheels.

What charge level should the battery be stored at long-term?

Between 40 and 60% of capacity, at a temperature of 10–20°C. Don't store the battery fully discharged (risk of cell damage) or fully charged for long periods (accelerates capacity loss).

How often should the drivetrain (chain) be lubricated?
