Electric Scooter or E-Bike for Commuting?
We sell both categories, so we have no reason to push one over the other. The comparison below uses real figures from products in stock, and it starts with the question most articles avoid: what you are actually allowed to ride on the street.

The legal part first, because it changes the rest of the discussion
Most comparisons of this kind go straight to weight and range. We start with the law, because for a daily commute on public roads it eliminates half the options from the outset.
In Romania, an electric scooter is only street legal if it does not exceed 25 km/h by construction. Above that threshold the vehicle is no longer classed as a scooter and falls under moped rules: type approval, registration, insurance, licence. Every scooter we sell exceeds 25 km/h by construction, from 40 km/h up to 85 km/h. They are performance vehicles for off-road and private property, not for a legal street commute. If you need a vehicle for the daily ride to work, the correct answer from our range is the electric bike.
An electric bike with pedal assistance limited to 250 W and 25 km/h does not have this problem: it rides legally on cycle lanes, with no licence, registration or insurance. That is why the rest of this comparison carries a permanent asterisk — the scooter wins on several practical points, but loses the one that matters most for commuting.
Weight and storage
The common expectation is that a scooter is far lighter. In practice, among vehicles with real commuting range, the gap is smaller than it looks:
The difference between a 25 kg scooter and a 27.8 kg bike is under 3 kg — not the decisive argument many articles make it out to be. The real difference is the folded shape: a folded scooter slides under a desk or into a small car boot without removing anything, whereas a folding bike stays a bulky object.
The interesting exception is the 14.5 kg folding mini e-bike, lighter than any scooter in the range and still street legal. If you carry it up stairs daily, weight matters more than any other specification.
Range and daily distance
Advertised range is almost always measured in ideal conditions: flat ground, no wind, light rider, minimum assistance. We wrote separately about how many kilometres you realistically get per charge, and the conclusion applies to both vehicle types: expect 25–40% less than the spec sheet figure, depending on terrain and riding style.
As an order of magnitude, across models in stock: our scooters claim between 40 and 70 km, and commuting e-bikes between 45 and 90 km depending on the battery. The bike has a structural advantage here, because you can keep pedalling when the battery runs low — on a scooter, a flat battery means pushing the vehicle.
Work out your round-trip distance, then add 40%. If you ride 12 km a day, look for a vehicle with at least 17 km of real range, not 12. That lets you skip daily charging and leaves margin for cold days, when battery capacity drops.
Comfort and road surface
On good tarmac over a short distance, the difference is small. On a poor road it becomes large, and for reasons of physics rather than brand.
- Wheel diameter matters more than suspension. A 29 inch wheel rolls over a pothole that stops a 10 inch wheel. Our scooters use 11–13 inch wheels, the bikes between 20 and 29 inch.
- Riding position: on a scooter you stand, with your weight on the same two contact points for the whole trip. Past 20–25 minutes, that tires you out. On a bike you have saddle, handlebars and pedals — three points of support and the option to shift position.
- Braking in the wet is more predictable with larger wheels and wider tyres.
Purchase and running cost
Charging cost is nearly identical for both, because it depends on battery capacity rather than vehicle type. We worked through the full cost per kilometre in a separate article — we are talking about pennies per charge, not pounds.
The real cost difference appears elsewhere: the battery is the most expensive component of any light electric vehicle, and its lifespan depends on how you treat it. A few hundred cycles more or less translates into a significant sum over time. Is a scooter better on potholed roads because it has suspension?
Suspension helps, but wheel diameter matters more. An 11 inch wheel gets stuck in potholes that a 27.5 or 29 inch wheel rolls straight over. On poor roads the bike remains safer and more comfortable.
Does charging an electric bike cost more than charging a scooter?
Not significantly. Charging cost depends on battery capacity in Wh rather than vehicle type, and amounts to pennies per charge for both. The real long-term cost difference comes from battery lifespan and how well you look after it.
Can I take an electric bike on a train or in a small car?
