The 7-speed freewheel is the standard drivetrain component for threaded rear hub motors in the All4eBikes range — all MTX kits use hubs with 1.375″ x 24 TPI external thread, the format that allows freewheel replacement without disassembling the motor. Unlike cassette systems (freehub with splines), the freewheel incorporates the ratcheting mechanism directly inside the sprocket block — a simple, robust and easy-to-replace unit.

Freewheel vs Cassette — why it matters for hub motors
All rear hub motors in the All4eBikes conversion kit range use hubs with 1.375″ x 24 TPI external thread — the freewheel format. This is the universal standard for brushless hub motors, as it allows a more compact, structurally stronger motor design with no splined freehub body to add width or complexity. The cassette system (splined freehub body) is used by performance bikes with 8–12 speeds and is not compatible with standard hub motors.
Why 7 speeds and not more
Freewheels have a practical maximum width of ~36mm for 7 speeds on a 135mm axle. 8–9 speed freewheels exist but extend past the shoulder of the hub motor axle on most standard 135mm hubs, requiring additional spacers and special derailleur alignment. 7 speeds is the optimal balance between available gear range and direct compatibility with the 135mm standard hub axle.
Thread lubrication — a mandatory installation step
Every time you install a freewheel, apply a layer of grease or anti-seize compound to the external hub thread before fitting. Without lubrication, every pedal stroke tightens the freewheel further onto the hub, and after years of use it becomes impossible to remove without destroying the component. This is by far the most common reason why old freewheels become permanently stuck on hub motors.

Installation and Maintenance
Installation Steps
- Remove the wheel from the frame and disconnect the motor cable
- Use a freewheel removal tool (Park Tool FR-1 or equivalent) to unscrew the old sprocket
- Clean and degrease the external thread on the hub
- Apply grease or anti-seize compound to the thread
- Thread the new 7-speed freewheel on by hand until it stops — pedalling will self-tighten it
- Adjust the rear derailleur for the new gear range
Maintenance
- Lube the chain regularly to reduce sprocket wear
- Check sprocket wear every 1000–1500 km
- Replace the chain before it stretches fully — a worn chain destroys sprockets quickly
- Always apply grease to the thread when removing, ready for the next installation
